The most notable of the OSH activities is Arts for Life . In 2008, following the turmoil of the post-election violence in Kenya, SFH set out to build pace and promote healing in one of the most affected slums in Nairobi through its partnership with the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA). A workshop, developed called “Poetry for Life” used poetry and other self-expression techniques as a tool allowing students to document their pride and hope for rebuilding their divided community. The student’s powerful writing was compiled into a book written and designed by the girls!
This single response gave life to a series of youth empowerment programming rightfully titled Arts For Life, workshops using the arts as a medium for leadership development, tolerance, and self-expression enriching students’ academic experience. To date, SFH has conducted the Arts for Life Program using Poetry, Photography, Drama and Music. The Arts For Life series deliberately cultivates a voice in the young women of Kibera. The Arts for Life Program has reached approximately 100 of the students at KGSA over 3 years. We are so excited about where the For Life series has taken each class of KGSA and we look forward to even more profound work by them.
